In 1963, Mount Batur erupted with incredible force, leaving behind a massive expanse of deep black sand and jagged volcanic rocks across the valley. The Mount Batur Jeep Day Tour is a highly practical way to see this rugged landscape, especially if you want to skip the exhausting early morning wake-up call required for the usual sunrise trips. We designed this daytime route specifically so you can spend your time exploring the famous black lava fields at a comfortable pace.

Choosing this mid-day option gives you a completely different perspective of the volcano. While regular cars stay stuck on the paved main roads, you get exclusive access to the hardened lava trails in a classic 4x4 Jeep. You can clearly see the sheer scale of the dried lava fields under the bright daylight, feeling the contrast between the smooth ride to Kintamani and the jarring, exciting terrain of the actual eruption site.

You can start this ride anytime between 9.00 AM and 2.00 PM. We are not rushing to catch the sunrise or the sunset, which makes your holiday schedule much more flexible. We usually suggest heading out after you enjoy a full breakfast at your hotel. If you want to adjust the timing, just let us know the day before, and we will arrange the exact departure time that works best for you.

Itineraries

  1. 7.30 AM - Depart from Your Accommodation

    Leave your hotel anywhere in Bali around this time to ensure you arrive on schedule. This base package does not include hotel transfers, so you will need to organize your own ride to our meeting point.

  2. 9.00 AM - Arrive at the Basecamp

    You will arrive at our main basecamp located at D’Yoga Bamboo House. Once you get there, our local guide will welcome you for a short briefing about the route while you enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee.

  3. 9.15 AM - Start the Off-Road Drive

    Get ready to feel the rough terrain. You will start the 30-minute off-road drive in your 4x4 Jeep, heading directly toward the main Mount Batur black lava exploration area.

  4. 09.45 AM - Light Brunch Break

    The Jeep will stop at the activity location where you can eat a light brunch. This gives you time to gather your energy before we begin the main part of the exploration.

  5. 10.00 AM - Black Lava and Black Sand Exploration

    This is the main highlight of the trip. You will spend time exploring the extensive black lava fields from the 1963 eruption and driving through the deep black sand. You will have plenty of time to step out of the vehicle, physically touch the sharp volcanic rocks, and take photos of the striking monochromatic landscape against the sky.

  6. 12.30 PM to 01.00 PM - Finish the Tour at Basecamp

    The off-road portion finishes, and you will arrive back at our basecamp around midday. From here, you are free to head back to your hotel or continue your road trip to other destinations around the Kintamani area.

Note

  • This activity involves rough terrain, but it is completely safe for beginners and children to join.
  • We do not recommend this trip for pregnant women, or anyone with high blood pressure, epilepsy, or similar medical conditions.
  • If a participant arrives clearly intoxicated, we will refuse service for safety reasons, and we will not issue a refund in this situation.
  • We might have to cancel the activity if the weather becomes too extreme to drive safely. If this happens, you can either pick a different date or ask for a full refund.
  • The package price is Rp400,000 per person, and we require a minimum booking of two people.
  • Note that if you are booking for only one person, there is an additional solo charge of Rp400,000.

Yes, the ride is perfectly safe for families with children. Our drivers are highly experienced with the rough tracks and know exactly how to keep the Jeep stable over the rocks. You just need to make sure your family wears sunscreen and hats, because the volcanic fields get quite warm during the middle of the day.

We strongly suggest wearing long pants and bringing a jacket because the wind around the mountain can get surprisingly cold, even during the day. You will also want to apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses to handle the glare off the black sand. Finally, do not forget to bring some physical cash for any small purchases you want to make outside of the main tour package.

If the weather turns bad and makes the off-road trails dangerous, we will cancel the trip to prioritize your safety. If we have to make that call, you have the option to either get a full refund of your payment or choose a completely different date for your tour.

This base package requires you to arrange your own transport and meet us at the D'Yoga Bamboo House basecamp by 9.00 AM. However, if you prefer to skip the drive and let someone else navigate the Bali traffic, we offer an upgraded day tour package that includes private round-trip hotel transfers. Your driver will pick you up directly from your hotel lobby. Just let us know when you book, and we will provide the updated pricing for the all-inclusive transport option.
