Sunrise Trekking with Singapore International School Group

The cold morning wind blowing through Kintamani did nothing to dampen the spirits of the 30 students from Singapore International School. For us at the Mount Batur Guide team, leading this highly energetic group of youths was an incredibly thrilling adventure.

Armed with thick jackets and the beams of dozens of headlamps piercing through the pitch-black night, our first steps began with laughter and high enthusiasm. The freezing mountain air was slowly replaced by a warming atmosphere as the group began their ascent along the challenging dirt trails and volcanic rocks.

The most noticeable challenge when leading a group this large wasn't conquering the terrain, but rather maintaining a harmonious hiking rhythm. With the diverse physical conditions of the participants, our team naturally spread out along the line.

The guides at the front were tasked with managing the pace so it wouldn't be too fast, the team in the middle endlessly cracked jokes to keep morale high, while the sweepers at the back ensured that those who needed extra resting time were always accompanied.

There were times when our rhythm slowed down drastically as the group faced steep, slippery inclines of gravel and sand. Yet, it was in these crucial moments that the excitement peaked. The students' cheers of encouragement for one another echoed, breaking the silence of the night, while our porters swiftly distributed drinking water to recharge their spirits.

All the exhaustion and aching legs after two hours of struggling to keep the pace paid off instantly when the group finally set foot on the summit area. Right before dawn broke, we successfully brought every single participant across the finish line without a single person giving up.

It was deeply satisfying for us to see those exhausted faces turn into expressions of absolute awe as the orange glow slowly pierced through the sea of clouds. Sitting together on the edge of the caldera while enjoying eggs boiled by the natural geothermal steam, they celebrated their success in conquering both nature's challenges and their own personal limits.
